Norman F****** Rockwell.
While viewing theamericanconservative.com I came across an article called, “ What Lana Del Rey Doesn’t Get About Norman F****** Rockwell,” by Jason Morgan. This article really made me think about who the f*** Norman Rockwell even was. An author, painter and an illustrator, but did his paintings have anything to do with his life? Rockwell paints depicted hope. He was married three different times and looking for a better world to live in. A world he painted about, Rockwell’s paintings showed hope, hope for a better future, and hope for a better life. He has a painting of a Thanksgiving feast but during that time he painted it, families were barely even able to get food onto the table. Lana Del Reys lyrics are about men all disappointing her, and how she hopes for someone better, but still wants the same guy. I think Lana Del Rey is a hopeless romantic herself, she sings sad songs about a better life and world which is exactly what Rockwell did with his paintings. Towards the end of the article, Jason writes “Rockwell was a visionary of hope. He had the courage to see something bad, and they imagine, and believe, that it could be better.” So many people today in society do not see the good that can come from something bad, and during Rockwell’s time society didn’t see the good that could come from the bad also. “ Hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have, but I have it.” Lana Del Rey sings in her song, this is something that Rockwell would have been able to relate too. This article was interesting how the author was able to show the differences in society and their art but in the end, relate it to each other. I never thought deeper into Del Rey’s song about Rockwell but now that I know I think of the song in a completely different view, a view of hope.
